Managing Uncertain, Inconsistent, and Incomplete Data

Course: Computer Science 2525 Research Topics in Data Management
Term: Winter 2008
Professor: Renée J. Miller
Description: This annual seminar covers "hot research topics in data management". This term, our focus will be on managing uncertain, inconsistent, and incomplete data. The course will be based on recent research results including work from prominent research groups (the Stanford Trio project, Washington's MysticQ, Cornell's MayBMS, and Cimple from Yahoo/Wisconsin to name a few) and other interesting trend setters in this area.
The course will focus on recent systems. We will cover some foundational work (for example on possible worlds and incomplete data) to understand the semantics of these systems. However, our main objective will be to understand how uncertain and inconsistent data can be used and managed in practice.
